Introduction
Following the successful completion of Phase I, EmpowerNet Uganda is preparing to launch Phase II of the Climate Resilience Program, focusing on river ecosystem restoration and community-led flood risk reduction.
Climate change has intensified flooding, soil erosion, and riverbank degradation across the region. Phase II will address these urgent challenges using nature-based and community-driven solutions.
Phase II Planned Activities
- Bamboo Planting for Riverbank Stabilization
Large-scale bamboo planting will be carried out along vulnerable rivers including:
- River Nyamugasani
- River Rwembyo
Why bamboo?
- Stabilizes riverbanks and reduces erosion
- Absorbs excess water during heavy rainfall
- Reduces sedimentation and landslides
- Restores riparian biodiversity
This is a powerful nature-based flood protection solution.
- Community River Desilting Campaigns
EmpowerNet Uganda will mobilize community action days to:
- Remove sediment and debris from river channels
- Restore natural water flow capacity
- Reduce risks of river overflow and flash floods
- Protect homes, farms, and infrastructure
These activities promote community ownership of disaster risk reduction.
- River Conservation & Anti-Encroachment Education
Community training will focus on:
- Protection of natural river channels and wetlands
- Dangers of riverbank encroachment and sand mining
- Sustainable land use near rivers
- Community monitoring of riparian ecosystems
These interventions strengthen long-term watershed management.
Vision for Phase II
Phase II will help communities adapt to extreme weather events, reduce flood risks, and protect vital river ecosystems for future generations.
