Uganda

Introduction

Building on the success of the first two phases of the Climate Resilience Program, EmpowerNet Uganda is preparing to launch Phase III, which will focus on climate-smart livelihoods, sustainable agroforestry, and household income strengthening within Bukonzo East Constituency, Kasese District.

This phase integrates environmental conservation, food security, and income generation, ensuring that climate action directly improves household livelihoods.

Why Phase III Matters

Climate change has significantly affected rural livelihoods through:

Reduced agricultural productivity

Increasing crop failure due to droughts and floods

Declining household incomes

Growing food insecurity

Phase III introduces climate-resilient cash crop trees and agroforestry systems that help families adapt economically while restoring ecosystems.

Phase III Key Interventions

Distribution of Climate-Resilient Cash Crop Trees

EmpowerNet Uganda will supply and promote the planting of high-value agroforestry crops, including:

Cocoa trees

Coffee trees

Additional climate-resilient fruit tree varieties

These crops are ideal for the Rwenzori ecosystem because they:

Thrive under agroforestry and mixed-cropping systems

Improve long-term soil fertility and biodiversity

Provide sustainable income streams for households

Farmers will receive training in:

Climate-smart agroforestry practices

Soil and water conservation

Organic farming and sustainable pest management

Post-harvest handling and value addition

Integrating Food Security with Environmental Conservation

The continued expansion of fruit tree planting will:

Improve household nutrition and dietary diversity

Provide year-round access to fruits for families and schools

Strengthen resilience to food shortages

Increase tree cover and carbon sequestration

This approach creates climate-resilient farming systems that benefit both people and the environment.

Building Sustainable Green Livelihoods

Phase III will promote:

Farmer groups and cooperative models

Climate-smart agribusiness skills

Market linkages for cocoa, coffee, and fruit products

Youth and women participation in green enterprises

The goal is to transition communities from climate vulnerability to climate-resilient economic empowerment.

Expected Outcomes of Phase III

Increased household incomes through agroforestry cash crops

Improved food and nutrition security

Expanded tree cover and restored ecosystems

Strengthened climate-resilient farming systems

Looking Ahead: Phase IV Expansion Across Kasese District

Following the successful implementation of Phase III, EmpowerNet Uganda will launch Phase IV, focusing on scaling the Climate Resilience Program beyond Bukonzo East to other areas across Kasese District.

Phase IV Vision: Scaling Impact District-Wide

Phase IV will aim to:

Replicate Successful Climate Models

The proven interventions from Phases I–III will be expanded to additional sub-counties and communities across Kasese District, including:

School and church tree planting programs

River ecosystem restoration initiatives

Climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry

Green livelihood and income programs

Strengthen District-Wide Climate Resilience

The scale-up will:

Increase forest and tree cover across the district

Reduce disaster risks from floods and landslides

Improve food security and livelihoods

Strengthen community climate adaptation capacity

Long-Term Vision

Phase IV represents a major step toward transforming Kasese into a model district for community-driven climate resilience and ecosystem restoration.

Call to Action

EmpowerNet Uganda invites partners, donors, and community leaders to join us as we scale this climate resilience journey across Kasese District.

By EmpowerNet Uganda Introduction Building on the
