Across the continent, millions of families depend on agriculture for survival, yet increasing climate shocks, environmental degradation, population growth, and global food system disruptions continue to threaten food security and rural livelihoods.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the regions most vulnerable to hunger, poverty, and climate change. More than 50% of the population in Africa experiences moderate or severe food insecurity, while over 20% of the population remains undernourished. Recent global projections indicate that by 2030, nearly 60% of the world’s chronically hungry people could be living in Africa if urgent action is not taken.

Despite these challenges, Africa possesses enormous agricultural potential. Smallholder farmers continue to produce the majority of food consumed across the continent. Studies show that across Sub-Saharan Africa, farms smaller than five hectares generate approximately 83% of the economic value of crop production, demonstrating the critical role of small-scale farmers in feeding the region.

In Uganda, agriculture remains the backbone of the economy and the primary source of livelihood for millions of households. About 66% of Uganda’s population works in agriculture, while nearly 74% of the population lives in rural areas.

However, most Ugandan farmers are still trapped in subsistence farming and remain highly vulnerable to poverty, food shortages, climate disasters, and unstable markets. More than 85% of Uganda’s farming population consists of smallholder farmers who largely depend on rain-fed agriculture.

Because many rural households rely almost entirely on seasonal rainfall, changing weather patterns now pose a major threat to food production and household incomes. Farmers increasingly face:

Prolonged droughts

Floods and landslides

Erratic rainfall seasons

Soil degradation and declining fertility

Crop pests and livestock diseases

Water scarcity

Deforestation and environmental destruction

Limited access to farming technologies and quality inputs

Poor market access and low farm-gate prices

Research in Uganda shows that climate-related risks such as prolonged dry seasons, irregular rainfall, and increasing pest outbreaks are becoming more frequent and severe, especially among rural smallholder communities dependent on rain-fed agriculture.

Women and youth are among the most affected. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, women contribute significantly to agricultural labor and food production, yet many continue to face barriers in accessing land ownership, financing, training opportunities, modern technologies, and agricultural markets.

At EmpowerNet Uganda, we believe that empowering smallholder farmers is one of the most effective ways to fight poverty, improve nutrition, strengthen climate resilience, and build sustainable rural economies.

Our Agricultural Support and Climate Resilience Programs are designed to help vulnerable farming communities transition from subsistence agriculture to productive, climate-smart, and income-generating farming systems that can withstand environmental and economic shocks.

Our Agricultural Support and Climate Resilience Programs

EmpowerNet Uganda works closely with vulnerable farming communities to strengthen food security, restore degraded ecosystems, improve household incomes, and build long-term resilience against climate change.

Our integrated programs support farmers through:

Climate-smart and regenerative agriculture training

Agroforestry and community tree planting

Soil and water conservation practices

Distribution of improved and drought-resistant seeds

Kitchen gardening and household nutrition programs

Small livestock and poultry support

Sustainable irrigation and water harvesting technologies

Farmer cooperatives and savings groups

Market linkage and agribusiness development

Youth and women empowerment initiatives

Community environmental restoration projects

Disaster preparedness and climate adaptation education

We promote sustainable farming practices that improve agricultural productivity while protecting the environment for future generations.

The Challenges Facing Smallholder Farmers in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa

Smallholder farmers face multiple interconnected challenges that continue to limit agricultural productivity and household well-being.

Climate Change and Environmental Degradation

Climate change has become one of the greatest threats to agriculture in Uganda and across Africa. Farmers increasingly experience:

Delayed and unpredictable rainfall seasons

Severe droughts

Flooding and landslides

Declining soil fertility

Drying water sources

Increased crop and livestock diseases

These climate shocks reduce harvests, increase food insecurity, and push vulnerable households deeper into poverty.

Limited Access to Agricultural Inputs and Technologies

Many smallholder farmers lack access to:

Improved seeds

Irrigation systems

Farm mechanization

Fertilizers and soil management solutions

Agricultural extension services

Climate information and early warning systems

Studies across Africa indicate that limited access to technology and climate information continues to weaken farmers’ ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Poverty and Food Insecurity

Although smallholder farmers produce much of the food consumed locally, many farming households remain food insecure themselves. Seasonal food shortages, low productivity, post-harvest losses, and unstable market prices continue to affect rural communities across Uganda.

Many families are forced to sell produce immediately after harvest at very low prices due to poor storage facilities and limited market access.

Land Fragmentation and Soil Degradation

Rapid population growth and land pressure continue to reduce farm sizes and contribute to soil degradation in many parts of Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Research in Uganda has shown a strong negative relationship between population pressure and soil quality, with many farmers unable to restore soil fertility due to limited resources and inadequate farming practices.

Our Three Pillars of Farmer Resilience

EmpowerNet Uganda’s Farmer Resilience programs are built around three key pillars that help farming households build stronger, healthier, and more resilient livelihoods.

1. Social Resilience

We strengthen communities by improving household well-being and promoting inclusive participation in agricultural development.

Our social resilience initiatives focus on:

Supporting vulnerable households

Empowering women and youth

Promoting farmer groups and cooperatives

Improving nutrition and food security

Building community knowledge-sharing systems

We believe strong communities are better prepared to respond to climate and economic challenges.

2. Economic Resilience

EmpowerNet Uganda helps farming households transition from subsistence farming to profitable and diversified agricultural enterprises.

We support farmers to:

Increase crop productivity and yields

Diversify household incomes

Access local and regional markets

Improve post-harvest handling and storage

Develop agribusiness and entrepreneurship skills

Build household savings and financial security

Our goal is to help farmers generate sustainable incomes that improve living standards and reduce poverty.

3. Environmental and Climate Resilience

Environmental conservation is central to sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Our environmental resilience initiatives include:

Tree planting and agroforestry

Wetland and watershed restoration

Soil conservation and erosion control

Organic farming and composting

Promotion of drought-resistant crops

Water harvesting and irrigation

Climate adaptation awareness campaigns

These interventions help restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, improve soil health, and strengthen communities against climate-related disasters.

Our Vision for the Future

EmpowerNet Uganda envisions rural communities where farmers are food secure, economically empowered, environmentally resilient, and capable of thriving despite climate change and other global challenges.

Through sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, community empowerment, and strategic partnerships, we are committed to transforming the lives of vulnerable smallholder farmers and building a healthier, greener, and more resilient
